Overview
Agate is a banded variety of chalcedony — a microcrystalline quartz (SiO₂) — that forms through rhythmic deposition of silica in cavities within volcanic rock. Over long periods, silica-rich fluids fill these voids layer by layer, resulting in the striking concentric banding that defines agate.
These stones typically form in gas bubbles of ancient lava flows, where slow cooling and mineral-rich water create alternating translucent and opaque zones. Each agate tells a geological story of changing conditions, preserved in its delicate layers.
Found primarily in volcanic and sedimentary environments, often within geodes, vesicles, and cavities.
Composition: SiO₂ (Silicon Dioxide)
Formation: Secondary Silica Deposition within Volcanic Cavities
Metaphysical Notes
Agate is valued for its stabilizing and protective properties. It is believed to ground emotional energy, enhance focus, and foster calm. Each layer is said to represent balance and harmony between the physical and spiritual realms.
