Like a storm captured in stone, these Larvikite spheres are a testament to the raw beauty of the Nordic landscape. Often referred to commercially as "Black Moonstone" due to its pearly luster, Larvikite is distinct from true moonstone; it is a unique monzonite feldspar found almost exclusively in the Larvik region of Norway.

The magic of these spheres lies in their Schiller effect—distinct flashes of silver, steel-blue, and charcoal that glimmer against a dark, iron-rich matrix. Unlike the broad splashes of color found in Labradorite, Larvikite offers a sophisticated, metallic sparkle that feels ancient, solid, and grounding.

Geological Overview

Larvikite is an igneous rock formed over 290 million years ago at a depth of nearly 30 kilometers. As the magma cooled slowly, the feldspar crystals within (rich in potassium and sodium) separated into microscopic layers. It is these alternating layers that refract light, creating the stone's signature silvery-blue sheen.

Aesthetic Appeal

These spheres are polished to a high gloss, allowing the internal crystalline structure to catch the light from every angle. The base color is a deep, gunmetal grey, punctuated by black inclusions of augite or biotite, providing a stunning monochrome palette that fits seamlessly into modern or industrial interior design.

Metaphysical Properties

  • Energetic Association: Root Chakra & Third Eye.
  • Symbolism: Grounding, Intellect, Protection.
  • Meaning: Larvikite is widely regarded as a stone of inner transformation and grounding. It is believed to repel negative energy and sharpen the intellect, helping to clear the mind of chaotic thoughts. It is a stone for those seeking stability during times of change.

Collector’s & Display Notes

These spheres are ideal desk companions or shelf accents. To best appreciate the optical phenomenon, display them in an area with indirect natural light or under a cool-toned lamp, which will activate the silver flashing.
