Overview
Mexican Lace Agate is a variety of banded chalcedony — a microcrystalline form of quartz (SiO₂) — known for its concentric layers and flowing band structures. These patterns form as silica-rich solutions fill cavities and fractures within volcanic rock, gradually crystallizing into rhythmic layers over time.
The distinctive lace-like appearance results from alternating impurities and trace minerals, including iron, manganese, and aluminum, which create complex color zoning and the characteristic “woven” effect. Many specimens also contain tiny quartz druzy pockets that sparkle under light.
Composition: SiO₂ (Silicon Dioxide)
Formation: Chalcedony Layers Deposited from Silica-Rich Fluids in Volcanic Cavities
Structure: Microcrystalline Quartz with Banded Zoning
