Moss Agate is a variety of Chalcedony, a cryptocrystalline form of Quartz (SiO₂). Unlike traditional dendritic agates, the "moss" patterns in these pieces are created by inclusions of manganese or iron hornblende that crystallized in branching patterns during the stone's formation. While it lacks the concentric banding of "true" agates, it shares the same Mohs hardness of 6.5–7, making it durable and capable of holding a high, glassy polish.
