Septarian, also known as Dragon Stone, is a unique sedimentary rock formed from a combination of calcite, aragonite, and limestone. These A-grade tumbled stones showcase subtle gray to beige tones with characteristic septa — natural mineral veins that formed as ancient marine mud cracked and mineralized over millions of years.
Purchase Options
- Single Stone: 1 piece (~30 – 50 g)
- 250 g Lot: ~6 – 8 stones (⭐ Best Value)
Color & Appearance
These A-grade stones feature the muted elegance of natural septarian — gray to brown limestone bases with faint veins of yellow calcite and aragonite. Each piece has its own organic pattern, resembling fossilized cracks or dragon skin. While polish levels are moderate to preserve texture, they maintain excellent form and structure with fine matrix definition.
Overview
Septarian nodules formed approximately 50–70 million years ago during the Cretaceous period when volcanic activity and marine sedimentation interacted. As the mud dried, it cracked, and minerals such as calcite, aragonite, and barite precipitated into the fissures, creating the characteristic septa or "crackled" patterns.
Composition: Primarily Calcite (CaCO₃), Aragonite, and Limestone Matrix
Formation: Sedimentary concretion with mineral infill
Structure: Trigonal (Calcite) and Orthorhombic (Aragonite)
Origin: Madagascar and Utah, USA
Mineral Note: The creamy yellow veins are calcite, while the gray to brown base is limestone and claystone.
Metaphysical Notes
Often called the “Dragon Stone,” Septarian is said to embody grounding, protection, and communication with the Earth’s ancient energy. It’s considered a stone of stability and personal strength, encouraging confidence and balance.
Why You'll Love It
- Natural blend of calcite, aragonite, and limestone
- Distinct fossil-like cracking patterns unique to each piece
- Ancient marine formation with visible mineral septa
- Symbolically connected to grounding and renewal
Trade Name Note: “Dragon Stone” is the popular trade name for Septarian nodules. This material is distinct from the green and red serpentine-based Dragon Blood Jasper.
