Smoky Quartz is a macrocrystalline variety of the mineral quartz, represented by the chemical formula SiO2. Unlike other coloured quartz varieties that rely on trace mineral inclusions, Smoky Quartz derives its distinctive colour from the natural irradiation of trace aluminum impurities within the crystal lattice. This process, occurring over millions of years in pegmatites and hydrothermal veins, produces hues ranging from light, translucent grey-brown to deep, nearly opaque black.
