Geological Overview
Tiger Eye is a chatoyant gemstone and a specific variety of macrocrystalline quartz, represented by the chemical formula SiO2. It is formed through a fascinating geological process known as pseudomorphosis, where quartz slowly replaces the fibrous mineral crocidolite (a type of blue asbestos) while retaining its parallel fibrous structure. The reflection of light off these microscopic, parallel silica fibres creates the stone's signature chatoyancy, or "cat's eye" optical effect. The rich golden-brown and amber colouration is the result of iron oxide staining during the pseudomorphic replacement.
