Introduction
These Yooperlite palm stones are polished from naturally occurring syenite found along the shores of Lake Superior. At first glance, they appear understated—grey, charcoal, and stone-like—but under UV light they reveal a dramatic transformation, glowing bright orange and yellow due to embedded sodalite.
Shaped into comfortable palm stones, these pieces balance geological curiosity with tactile appeal, making them ideal for collectors, educators, or anyone fascinated by minerals that reveal hidden properties.
Geological Details
Yooperlite is the trade name for syenite—an intrusive igneous rock—containing significant amounts of sodalite, a feldspathoid mineral belonging to the cubic crystal system and the tectosilicate mineral class. The host syenite is composed primarily of alkali feldspar with minor mafic minerals.
These rocks formed deep within the Earth’s crust and were later transported and rounded by glacial and shoreline processes. The sodalite inclusions fluoresce intensely under longwave UV light (365 nm), a property that has made Yooperlite a modern collector favorite.
Aesthetic Appeal
In normal lighting, Yooperlite presents as a mottled grey to charcoal stone with subtle white and brown mineral patches. The polish brings out depth and texture while maintaining a natural, stone-forward appearance.
Under UV light, the internal sodalite fluoresces in vivid oranges and yellows, creating a striking contrast to the otherwise muted exterior. The palm-stone shape makes this transformation easy and engaging to experience.
Metaphysical Properties
Yooperlite is often associated with self-expression, clarity, and emotional release. Many people work with it as a stone that encourages honesty and illumination—symbolically bringing hidden thoughts or feelings to the surface, much like its fluorescence reveals what is unseen.
Why You Will Love This
- Displays dramatic fluorescence under UV light
- Comfortable palm-stone shape for hands-on exploration
- Authentic North American geological material
- A conversation piece that bridges science and natural beauty

Collector’s Note
Yooperlite is valued not for crystal form but for its fluorescence and geological context. These palm stones are selected for sodalite concentration, polish quality, and overall balance. UV intensity will vary naturally from piece to piece.
Display Recommendations
Display in natural light to appreciate the stone’s texture, and pair with a 365 nm UV flashlight to reveal its fluorescence. Yooperlite pairs well with educational mineral displays or as a hands-on feature in a curated collection.
